iphone_versus_nokiaMuch has been said about Apple conquering the high end smartphone market within three years with the Iphone, however Nokia still has the majority of market share. So are Nokia's flagship Nseries phones as good as the Iphone?

Apple managed to turn geek into chic with its iMac in the 1990's, and repeated the process with the launch of the iphone in June 2007. The design was classic Apple - clinical with minimal fuss and even fewer buttons, however the more technically savvy were rather blunt in their comparisons - poor bluetooth support, no internet tethering available, non-removable battery, no 3G, no copy/paste and poor battery to name but a few issues. A year later the 3G model solved many of those gripes, but it was not until the OS3.0 software update that the Iphone became a serious contender for many.

They did get something right. Apple did what Nokia should have done 5 years ago. They realised that people were taking advantage of the power of the phone's OS and writing custom applications for the phone, and set up the Application Store. Now, hardcore mobile users that have used Symbian and similar powered phones have been downloading apps from the likes of GetJar.com for years, but it was not as straightforward as it could have been to install them. Then Apple comes along and designs an App store right on the phone, which, with one click the user can download thousands of free and paid for applications. Furthermore it controlled this with a rod of iron, forcing everyone selling products on it to give them a 30% cut of all sales. With no other option (unless the phone was jailbroken) it quickly filled up with applications to meet every need.

So, you're in the market for a new phone - what do you choose? Here I've broken down many of the common tasks that users will want to do on a phone. I've compared the new Iphone 3GS to the Nokia N85, which is a mid range slider model in the Nseries line up.
